Summary: Having qualified as a solicitor in 1996, Baljit worked at a busy criminal defence practice in Birmingham for a number of years. He was the founding partner at Tank Jowett Solicitors in 2000 until its merger with Noble Solicitors in 2011 where he is now an Equity Partner/Director.
Baljit is an elected member of the Legal Services Commission Regional Duty Solicitor Committee.
Expertise: Baljit deals exclusively with criminal defence work with particular emphasis on business crime and fraud.
He has acted for clients in SFO prosecutions, MTIC/Carousel frauds, HMRC prosecutions, insurance frauds and various Trading Standards prosecutions. He has extensive experience in defending confiscation proceedings and POCA prosecutions.
He has also been involved in defending serious crime including defending murder charges, serious drugs offences, sexual offences, and serious assaults.
His cases have regularly been reported in the national press.
Notable Cases:
R v H – This was a multi-handed pharmaceutical drugs fraud with estimated losses to the industry in the region of £2billion. The case involved complex legal arguments on admissibility and included various media applications for the lifting of press restrictions. Successful appeal against conviction mounted in the Court of Appeal resulting in the conviction being quashed.
R v R – This was a £40m multi-handed MTIC/Carousel fraud. Successful defence mounted on behalf of the defendant with the Crown eventually conceding and dropping the case against the client.
R v M – Multi-handed and multi-million pound Trading Standard prosecution involving the largest ever Ebay fraud. Successful negotiation with prosecution regarding a favourable Basis of Plea resulting in a non-custodial sentence for the client.
R v K – multi-handed SFO prosecution involving corruption allegations. Again successful negotiations with SFO resulting in a non-custodial sentence for the client.
R v A – Multi-handed Insurance fraud involving accident claims.
R v B – Multi-handed HMRC prosecution into company fraud involving payments of PAYE and VAT.
Various other business crime and fraud defence cases dealt with including defending complex confiscation proceedings and POCA prosecution.
